Neoregelia ‘Mendoza’

Neoregelia ‘Mendoza’ is an exceptionally attractive variegated bromeliad prized for its bright foliage and intensely colored central rosette. Long, gracefully arranged leaves form a symmetrical, open rosette, displaying broad creamy-white to pale yellow coloration bordered by contrasting green margins.

As the plant approaches maturity and flowering, the center can develop brilliant shades of pink, crimson, and burgundy. This concentrated flush of color creates a beautiful focal point against the pale variegated foliage and gives ‘Mendoza’ its distinctive tropical character.

Like other Neoregelias, its flowers are relatively small and develop within the central cup. The foliage—and particularly the colorful central blush—is the main ornamental attraction.

Its sculptural form makes Neoregelia ‘Mendoza’ an excellent specimen for bromeliad collections, tropical container arrangements, shaded patios, mounted displays, and frost-free landscapes. Each mature rosette will eventually produce offsets, or “pups,” allowing the plant to develop into an attractive cluster over time.

Light: Provide bright filtered light or partial shade. Good light encourages compact growth, strong variegation, and richer central coloration. Protect the plant from intense midday or afternoon sun, particularly when grown in containers.

Water: Keep a small amount of fresh water in the central rosette and replace or flush it regularly. Water the growing medium as needed, allowing excess water to drain freely. Avoid keeping the root zone continuously saturated.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is ideal. Good air circulation is equally important, especially in warm, humid environments.

Potting Mix: Grow in a loose, fast-draining bromeliad mix that allows excellent airflow around the roots. Neoregelias have relatively modest root systems and should never sit in heavy, waterlogged soil.

Temperature: Best grown in warm tropical or subtropical conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Bromeliads generally require considerably less fertilizer than many conventional foliage plants, and excessive feeding can negatively affect form and coloration.

Growth Habit: Forms a broad, architectural rosette. After a mature rosette completes its flowering cycle, it gradually declines while producing pups around its base. These offsets can be left attached to form a colony or separated once sufficiently developed.

Color Note: Bromeliad coloration naturally varies according to maturity, light intensity, growing conditions, and stage of the blooming cycle. Young plants or recently separated pups may not yet display the intense central coloration seen on mature specimens.
