Orthophytum Navioides

Orthophytum navioides – Rare Red Brazilian Bromeliad

Orthophytum navioides is an extraordinary collector bromeliad known for its dramatic starburst appearance and spectacular red coloration. Currently accepted botanically as Sincoraea navioides, this distinctive species has long been known and cultivated by bromeliad enthusiasts under the name Orthophytum navioides.

The plant produces a dense rosette of numerous long, narrow leaves with finely spined margins. As the plant matures, particularly around flowering, the foliage can develop brilliant shades of scarlet, crimson and orange-red, creating the fiery appearance that makes this species so desirable.

Native to Bahia, Brazil, Sincoraea navioides naturally occurs as a lithophytic bromeliad growing in rocky environments. Its unusual growth habit and intense coloration give it a completely different appearance from many of the more familiar tropical bromeliads.

Color & Growth

The foliage is one of the most impressive characteristics of this bromeliad. Mature plants can develop intense red coloration concentrated through the center and surrounding foliage, producing a striking starburst effect. Color intensity can vary according to maturity, growing conditions and light exposure.

This species can also produce offsets on elongated stolons, eventually creating an unusual cluster of individual rosettes.

Growing Orthophytum navioides

Grow in bright filtered light with excellent air circulation. A very fast-draining bromeliad mix is recommended because this species naturally grows associated with rocky substrates. Water thoroughly, but avoid keeping the growing medium constantly saturated.

As with most tropical bromeliads, protect the plant from freezing temperatures and acclimate gradually when increasing light exposure.

Orthophytum navioides was transferred to the genus Sincoraea and its currently accepted botanical name is Sincoraea navioides. The traditional name Orthophytum navioides remains widely recognized among bromeliad growers and collectors.

Each plant is a living specimen and may vary naturally in size, shape and coloration. Red coloration may become more or less intense depending on maturity and growing conditions.
