Description

Aechmea correia-araujoi – Rare Banded Brazilian Species Bromeliad

Aechmea correia-araujoi is an unusual and highly ornamental species bromeliad native to Bahia, Brazil. Unlike many Aechmeas grown primarily for their flowers, this species commands attention long before blooming thanks to its spectacular patterned foliage.

The elongated leaves emerge in brilliant lime to yellow-green tones and are crossed by irregular dark green to nearly black bands. No two leaves display exactly the same pattern, giving the rosette a wonderfully wild, camouflage-like appearance. Dark markings toward the leaf tips add even more contrast.

The leaves form an upright, funnel-shaped water-holding rosette. As the plant matures, its architectural form and bold markings become increasingly impressive.

Aechmea correia-araujoi is also naturally stoloniferous. Mature plants can send out pups on stolons, eventually developing into an eye-catching colony when offsets are allowed to remain attached.

This is a true species rather than a named ornamental hybrid and is an excellent choice for bromeliad enthusiasts looking for something unusual, botanical, and instantly recognizable.

Flowering

Mature plants can produce a tall, branched inflorescence rising above the foliage. The flower structure includes contrasting red primary bracts and pale yellow flowers. As with other bromeliads, an individual mature rosette flowers once and can subsequently produce offsets that continue the plant.

Care Guide

Light:
Grow in bright filtered light or partial shade. Good light helps maintain compact growth and strong foliage markings. Protect the plant from intense midday or afternoon sun, particularly when it has been grown under shade.

Water:
Keep some clean water in the central tank during warm growing conditions and periodically flush and replace it. Water the potting medium thoroughly but allow excess water to drain freely. Avoid keeping the root zone constantly saturated.

Potting Mix:
Use a loose, airy, fast-draining bromeliad or epiphytic mix. Aechmea correia-araujoi naturally grows as an epiphyte, so excellent drainage and aeration around the roots are important.

Humidity & Airflow:
Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, but good air circulation is equally important. Avoid keeping the plant continuously wet in stagnant conditions.

Temperature:
Best grown in warm tropical to subtropical conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold temperatures.

Fertilizer:
Feed lightly during active growth using a diluted bromeliad or balanced fertilizer. Avoid heavy fertilization, which can encourage overly soft green growth and diminish the plant's compact appearance.

Growth Habit:
This species produces offsets and can spread by stolons. Pups may be left attached to create a specimen colony or separated once sufficiently developed.

Why We Love It

The foliage is the star. Its brilliant chartreuse-green background and irregular dark banding give Aechmea correia-araujoi an appearance unlike the typical bromeliad. It is colorful without needing to be in bloom and becomes increasingly impressive as it develops additional rosettes.

Please note: Each plant is naturally unique. Color intensity, banding, size, and leaf pattern will vary from plant to plant and may change depending on growing conditions and light exposure. Unless specifically listed as the exact plant, photos are representative of the plants available.
