Aechmea zebrina ‘Pink’ – Striking Zebra Foliage & Spectacular Pink Bloom
Aechmea zebrina ‘Pink’ is an exceptional tropical bromeliad combining dramatic foliage with an equally impressive flowering display. Its broad, arching leaves form a substantial rosette and feature a beautiful silvery-green surface crossed by irregular dark green horizontal bands, creating the distinctive zebra pattern for which the species is known.
The foliage alone makes this bromeliad highly ornamental, but a mature specimen in bloom becomes truly spectacular. From the center of the rosette emerges a tall, upright inflorescence accented by brilliant pink bracts and branching flower structures with yellow-green tones. The combination of striped foliage and vivid pink coloration creates an unmistakably tropical centerpiece.
Like other tank-forming Aechmea bromeliads, Aechmea zebrina ‘Pink’ forms a central cup that naturally collects water. It performs beautifully in warm, humid environments with excellent airflow and bright filtered light.
After flowering, the mature mother rosette will gradually complete its natural life cycle while producing offsets, or pups, around its base. These pups can eventually mature and continue the plant for future generations.
Plant Features
- Botanical Name: Aechmea zebrina ‘Pink’
- Plant Type: Tropical bromeliad
- Growth Habit: Upright, spreading rosette
- Foliage: Silvery-green leaves with distinctive dark green zebra-like banding
- Bloom: Tall, highly ornamental inflorescence with vivid pink bracts and yellow-green accents
- Use: Bromeliad collections, tropical gardens, shaded patios, containers, and bright indoor spaces
Light
Provide bright filtered light or bright indirect light. Good light helps maintain strong growth and attractive foliage coloration. Protect the plant from intense midday sun, especially when grown in containers or when it has not been acclimated to stronger light.
Water
Keep a small amount of clean water in the central rosette, or tank, and refresh it periodically. Water the potting medium as needed, allowing it to remain lightly moist but never continuously saturated. Good drainage is essential.
Humidity & Airflow
Aechmea zebrina appreciates moderate to high humidity but also benefits greatly from good air circulation. Avoid keeping the plant constantly wet in stagnant conditions.
Temperature
This tropical bromeliad prefers warm conditions. Protect it from frost and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. Plants grown outdoors should be moved or protected when temperatures become unsuitable for tropical bromeliads.
Potting Mix
Use a loose, fast-draining bromeliad or epiphytic-style potting mix that allows plenty of air around the root system. Avoid dense soils that remain waterlogged for extended periods.
Fertilizer
Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted, balanced fertilizer suitable for bromeliads. Bromeliads generally require only modest fertilization, so avoid heavy or excessive feeding.
Growth & Bloom Cycle
Each mature rosette flowers once. After blooming, the mother plant gradually declines while producing pups around its base. Allow the pups time to develop before separating them, or leave them attached to create a fuller bromeliad cluster.
Please Note
Plants are living organisms and natural variation should be expected. Foliage pattern, coloration, size, shape, and stage of bloom may vary from plant to plant. Unless specifically identified as the exact plant being offered, photographs represent the variety and its potential appearance at maturity or during flowering.
