Agave angustifolia var. marginata – Variegated Caribbean Agave

Agave angustifolia var. marginata, commonly known in the nursery trade as Agave ‘Variegated Caribbean’, is an exceptionally attractive variegated agave valued for its bold form, bright coloration, and excellent tolerance of hot, dry conditions.

The plant develops a symmetrical rosette of long, narrow, sword-like leaves. Rich green centers are bordered by creamy yellow to golden margins, producing a beautiful contrast that remains ornamental throughout the year. Its upright, radiating foliage gives the plant a clean architectural quality that works especially well as a specimen or accent plant.

With its combination of tropical character and drought tolerance, Variegated Caribbean Agave is an excellent choice for South Florida landscapes, xeriscapes, rock gardens, poolside plantings, and large decorative containers. Plants may also gradually produce offsets around the base, eventually creating an impressive colony when allowed to naturalize.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun to bright partial sun. Strong light encourages compact growth and attractive variegation. Plants moving from shaded nursery conditions into intense direct sun should be acclimated gradually to reduce the possibility of sunburn.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly and then allow the soil to dry substantially before watering again. Established plants are highly drought tolerant. Avoid keeping the root zone continuously wet, as prolonged moisture can encourage root and crown problems.

🌱 Soil

Plant in a fast-draining soil or succulent mix. Excellent drainage is especially important during periods of frequent rainfall. For container culture, always use a pot with adequate drainage holes.

🌡️ Temperature

This agave thrives in warm climates and handles Florida heat exceptionally well. Protect young or container-grown plants from prolonged freezing temperatures. In colder regions, it can be grown in a container and moved to a protected location during winter.

💦 Humidity

Average outdoor humidity is generally well tolerated as long as the plant receives good airflow and the growing medium drains freely. In humid climates, avoid unnecessary frequent watering.

🌿 Fertilizer

Agaves require relatively little fertilizer. A light application of a balanced or succulent fertilizer during active growth is generally sufficient. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage overly soft growth.

✂️ Maintenance

Remove old or damaged lower leaves as needed. Offsets can be left in place to develop a larger clump or separated once sufficiently established. Handle carefully, as the foliage has sharp marginal teeth and a pointed terminal spine.
