Description
Calathea âBella Carlinaâ Care Guide
Genus: Goeppertia (syn. Calathea) âĒ Common name: Prayer Plant
Light
Bright, indirect to medium filtered light. Avoid direct sun which can fade or crisp the leaves. A north or east window is ideal; sheer-curtained south/west windows also work.
Water
Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 0.5â1âģ feels just barely dry. Use distilled, rain, or filtered water to avoid leaf edge browning from minerals/chlorine. Always empty saucers.
Humidity & Temperature
Thrives at 50â70%+ humidity. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group plants. Keep between 65â80°F (18â27°C) and away from drafts/AC vents.
Soil & Potting
Use a light, airy mix that holds moisture but drains well: 50% highâquality peat/coco + 25% perlite + 15% fine bark + 10% compost. Pot with drainage; repot every 12â18 months or when rootbound.
Feeding
During springâsummer, feed monthly with a balanced, diluted (Â― strength) liquid fertilizer. Pause in fallâwinter when growth slows.
Growth & Size
Compact clumping habit; mature leaves can reach 8â10âģ across with good humidity and steady light. New leaves unfurl frequently in warm months.
Pet Safety
Nonâtoxic / petâsafe to cats and dogs.
Common Notes
- Crispy edges = low humidity or mineral-heavy water.
- Faded pattern = too much light; move back from window.
- Drooping after watering often resolves within hours; persistent droop may indicate overwatering.
- Leaf movement (prayer) is normalâleaves raise at night, lower by day.
