Description

Neoregelia ‘Elwood’ – Deep Burgundy Foliage with a Brilliant Red Heart

Neoregelia ‘Elwood’ is a spectacular tropical bromeliad distinguished by its intense burgundy, wine-red, and purple-toned foliage. The broad, glossy leaves form an attractive open rosette, while the center can develop a brilliant scarlet-red flush that creates a dramatic contrast against the darker outer foliage.

One of the greatest attractions of ‘Elwood’ is that its foliage provides exceptional ornamental color even when the plant is not flowering. Under bright filtered light, mature plants can develop remarkably deep pigmentation, ranging from reddish bronze to dark burgundy-purple, with vivid red concentrated toward the center of the rosette.

Its strong architectural shape and rich coloration make this Neoregelia an excellent choice for bromeliad collections, tropical landscapes, patios, decorative containers, mounted displays, and other warm, humid growing environments.

Plant Features

  • Rich burgundy, wine-red, and purple-toned foliage
  • Brilliant red central coloration
  • Broad, glossy leaves arranged in a symmetrical rosette
  • Excellent ornamental color even when not flowering
  • Color intensifies under good growing conditions and bright filtered light
  • Produces offsets, or “pups,” as the plant matures
  • Excellent for containers, patios, bromeliad collections, and tropical landscapes

Light

Grow in bright filtered light or bright indirect light for strong growth and the best foliage coloration. Adequate light helps develop the deep burgundy and red tones characteristic of ‘Elwood.’ Protect from intense midday or afternoon sun unless the plant has been properly acclimated.

Water

Keep a small amount of clean water in the central rosette or “cup,” refreshing it regularly. Water the root zone as needed while allowing the growing medium to remain well aerated. Avoid keeping the potting mix continuously saturated.

Humidity & Air Circulation

Neoregelia ‘Elwood’ appreciates moderate to high humidity combined with good air circulation. Air movement is particularly beneficial in warm, humid environments and helps prevent stagnant moisture around the foliage.

Temperature

This is a tropical bromeliad that performs best in warm conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. Container-grown plants can be moved to a protected location when unusually cold weather is expected.

Potting & Growing Medium

Use a loose, fast-draining bromeliad or epiphytic growing medium. Good drainage and aeration around the root system are more important than a heavy, moisture-retentive soil.

Growth & Pups

After reaching maturity, Neoregelias naturally produce offsets around the mother plant. These pups can be left together to create an increasingly impressive cluster or separated once sufficiently developed to establish individual plants.

Coloration

Foliage coloration naturally varies according to light intensity, maturity, season, and growing conditions. Plants grown with sufficient filtered light generally develop stronger burgundy and red pigmentation than plants grown under heavier shade.

Please note: Each plant is naturally unique. Color intensity, markings, shape, size, and number of pups may vary from the representative photographs.
