Neoregelia ‘Fireball’ – Brilliant Red Tropical Bromeliad

Neoregelia ‘Fireball’ is one of the most recognizable compact bromeliads, prized for its intense coloration, glossy foliage, and naturally spreading growth habit. Its small rosettes develop rich shades of burgundy, crimson, scarlet, and brilliant red when grown under strong filtered light.

Rather than relying on a large flower display for its ornamental appeal, ‘Fireball’ provides exceptional foliage color for much of its life. Mature plants readily produce pups on stolons, gradually creating clusters and colonies that can produce an impressive mass of tropical color.

The compact growth habit makes Neoregelia ‘Fireball’ particularly versatile. It can be grown in containers, hanging baskets, mounted displays, bromeliad arrangements, tropical gardens, or even allowed to form colorful colonies in suitable frost-free landscapes.

Color intensity varies naturally according to maturity, season, and growing conditions. Strong filtered light generally encourages the richest red coloration, while plants grown under heavier shade may display more green or burgundy tones.

Light

Grow in bright filtered light or bright indirect light for the strongest coloration. Good light is particularly important for developing the brilliant red tones associated with ‘Fireball.’ Protect plants from intense midday sun unless they have been properly acclimated, as sudden exposure can scorch the foliage.

Water

Keep a small amount of clean water in the central rosette and refresh it regularly. Water the root zone as needed, allowing excess water to drain freely. Bromeliads appreciate moisture but should not remain in heavy, continuously saturated soil.

Soil

Use a loose, airy, fast-draining bromeliad mix. Good drainage and air circulation around the root system are more important than rich soil. When mounted or grown epiphytically, provide adequate moisture while allowing the plant to dry slightly between waterings.

Temperature

Neoregelia ‘Fireball’ prefers warm tropical to subtropical conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold temperatures. Container-grown plants can be moved into a protected location when unusually cold weather is expected.

Humidity & Airflow

Moderate to high humidity encourages healthy tropical growth, but good airflow is equally important. Avoid keeping the plant continuously wet in stagnant conditions.

Growth Habit

‘Fireball’ has a naturally compact, clustering habit and readily produces pups. These offsets can be left attached to create increasingly full colonies or separated once sufficiently developed to produce additional plants.

Coloration

Foliage color can vary significantly with light intensity, maturity, temperature, and growing conditions. Plants may arrive displaying combinations of green, burgundy, crimson, or red. With appropriate light and acclimation, established plants can develop the spectacular fiery coloration for which ‘Fireball’ is known.
