Neoregelia mcwilliamsii — Bold Color, Effortless Style
Meet Neoregelia mcwilliamsii—a species bromeliad prized for its clean, architectural rosette and the dramatic coral-red blush that lights up the center cup under brighter light. Native to tropical forests of South America, Neoregelias are tank bromeliads: their leaf rosette forms a reservoir that hydrates the plant and invites a tiny world of life. Beautiful in pots, hung as a specimen, or mounted for a gallery-style display.
✨ Highlights
- Genus: Neoregelia (Bromeliaceae)
- Color pop: Center cup blushes vivid coral/red with increased light
- Form: Broad, symmetrical rosette with glossy green foliage
- Display-ready: Ideal for shelves, patios, or mounted epiphyte boards
- Low-maintenance: Drought-tolerant once established; easy indoors in bright light
🌿 Care Guide
Light: Bright, indirect light indoors. Outdoors (South FL): dappled shade or gentle morning sun; avoid harsh afternoon sun that can scorch leaves. More light = stronger center blush.
Water: Keep non-chlorinated water in the central cup and refresh/flush weekly to prevent stagnation. Keep the potting mix barely moist; allow the top ~1" to dry between waterings.
Potting Mix: Fast-draining bromeliad/epiphyte blend—orchid bark + chunky peat/coir + perlite or horticultural charcoal. Excellent aeration is key.
Humidity: Thrives at 50%+ but adapts well to typical indoor humidity with good light and airflow.
Feeding: Light feeder. During warm months, use a very dilute (¼-strength) urea-free epiphyte fertilizer as a foliar mist or a few drops in the cup; flush the cup monthly to avoid salt build-up.
Growth & Cycle: Monocarpic rosette—after coloring/flowering, the mother slowly declines while producing pups at the base.
Propagation: Separate pups when they are ~⅓–½ the size of the mother. Pot pups in the same airy mix and keep slightly more humid until established.
Pet-friendly note: Bromeliads like Neoregelia are generally considered non-toxic to pets. As always, discourage chewing to protect both plant and pet.
