Neoregelia ‘Wild Rabbit’ is an exceptional variegated bromeliad hybrid created by renowned hybridizer Chester Skotak. Its lineage combines Neoregelia carolinae variegated × ‘Hannibal Lector’ with ‘Tiger Cub’, resulting in one of the most distinctive patterned Neoregelias in cultivation.

The broad, slightly arching leaves feature luminous lime to fresh green centers bordered by creamy-white marginal variegation. Across this bright background runs an unpredictable display of crimson to deep red horizontal bands, streaks, and broken markings. No two leaves are patterned exactly alike, giving the entire rosette a wonderfully wild, hand-painted appearance.

As the plant receives strong filtered light, its coloration can become increasingly dramatic, with richer red banding and stronger contrast between the green centers and pale margins. The plant forms a broad, open rosette while remaining relatively compact compared with many larger landscape Neoregelias.

With its unusual combination of variegation, tiger-like banding, and brilliant tropical color, ‘Wild Rabbit’ makes an outstanding specimen for bromeliad collections, tropical patios, decorative containers, and bright indoor spaces.

Care Guide

Light: Bright, filtered light is ideal. Good light encourages a compact growth habit and brings out the strongest red coloration and foliage contrast. Protect the plant from harsh, prolonged midday sun, particularly if it has been grown under shade.

Water: Like most tank-forming Neoregelias, ‘Wild Rabbit’ naturally holds water within its central rosette. Keep some fresh water in the central cup during warm, active growth and periodically flush and replace it. Water the growing medium as needed, allowing excess water to drain freely.

Soil: Grow in a loose, fast-draining bromeliad mix that provides excellent aeration around the roots. Avoid dense or continuously saturated soil.

Temperature: Prefers warm tropical to subtropical conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold temperatures.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, especially when combined with good air circulation.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Bromeliads require relatively little fertilizer, and excessive feeding can produce overly soft growth or diminish foliage coloration.

Growth Habit: Forms a broad, colorful rosette and eventually produces offsets, or “pups,” around the mother plant. These can be left attached to create a fuller cluster or separated once sufficiently developed.

Color Note: Foliage coloration and pattern intensity naturally vary with maturity, season, and growing conditions. Strong filtered light generally produces the richest crimson banding and most compact growth.
