$39.99
Orthophytum gurkenii is one of the most spectacular terrestrial bromeliads available to collectors. Native to the rocky landscapes of Minas Gerais, Brazil, this rare species forms a dramatic rosette of deep chocolate to nearly black leaves intricately patterned with shimmering silver bands that resemble exotic snakeskin. Unlike most bromeliads, it grows directly in well-drained soil rather than forming a central water tank, making it a truly unique addition to any rare plant collection.

Description
Orthophytum gurkenii
Orthophytum gurkenii is a rare terrestrial bromeliad native to the mountainous regions of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. Unlike the majority of bromeliads that naturally grow attached to trees, this remarkable species thrives among rocky outcrops where excellent drainage and abundant sunlight create ideal growing conditions.
Its dramatic rosette is composed of narrow, arching leaves colored deep chocolate-brown to nearly black, heavily decorated with brilliant silver cross-banding that creates a striking snakeskin appearance. The combination of bold coloration and architectural form has made this species one of the most sought-after Orthophytums among collectors worldwide.
Mature plants typically develop compact rosettes measuring approximately 6–8 inches across before producing an impressive upright flower spike that may reach nearly 20 inches tall. Bright lime-green bracts, delicate white flowers, and developing offsets along the flowering stem create an extraordinary display rarely seen in bromeliads.
Plant Care
- Light: Bright light to several hours of direct sun produces the darkest foliage and strongest silver markings.
- Water: Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. Unlike tank bromeliads, do not keep water sitting in the center of the plant.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is generally sufficient with good air circulation.
- Growing Medium: Use an extremely fast-draining cactus, succulent, or mineral-based mix.
- Temperature: Best between 68–95°F. Protect from frost and prolonged cold temperatures.
- Growth Habit: Terrestrial bromeliad that gradually forms offsets after flowering.
Whether displayed as a specimen in a decorative container or featured within a rare bromeliad collection, Orthophytum gurkenii offers an unforgettable combination of texture, color, and architectural beauty that few tropical plants can match.
