Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’

Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’ – A Rare Tropical Cycad with Timeless Character

Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’ is a live tropical cycad prized for its narrow, elongated leaflets, graceful pinnate foliage, and distinctive architectural appearance. Its leathery leaflets display rich green to muted blue-green tones, creating an elegant, finely textured silhouette. The name ‘Tiloo Cay’ is treated here as a horticultural or locality designation within the genus Zamia.

A Living Connection to an Ancient World

Some plants impress with enormous leaves or brilliant flowers. Others captivate through their form, their character, and the quiet beauty of their foliage. Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’ belongs to the latter group.

Its slender leaflets extend along gracefully arranged fronds, creating a refined tropical silhouette. Subtle variations of green and blue-green lend depth to the foliage, while its compact, sculptural growth makes it especially appealing to collectors of unusual cycads.

Cycads belong to an ancient lineage of seed plants whose evolutionary history stretches back millions of years. Although they may resemble palms, they are botanically distinct, producing cones rather than flowers.

For collectors who appreciate slow-growing botanical treasures, Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’ offers the pleasure of watching a remarkable plant develop its character over time.

🌿 Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’ Care Guide

☀️ Light: Provide bright filtered light or partial shade. Gentle morning sunlight may be beneficial, but protect young or acclimating plants from intense afternoon sun.

💧 Watering: Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the growing medium begins to dry. Avoid constantly saturated soil, which can encourage root and caudex rot.

🌱 Soil: Use a loose, well-draining growing medium with good aeration. A mixture containing pine bark, perlite, and other coarse components can help maintain healthy roots.

🌡️ Temperature: Warm tropical conditions are preferred. Protect from frost and prolonged cold weather. Exact cold tolerance has not been established for this particular Zamia selection.

💦 Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is beneficial, particularly during new growth, provided there is adequate air circulation.

🌿 Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer at a modest rate during active growth. Avoid excessive fertilization, especially when the plant is dormant or growing slowly.

🌴 Growth Habit: Slow-growing cycad with pinnate fronds and an architectural appearance. Mature dimensions depend on its underlying species identity and growing conditions.

⚠️ Important: Zamia plants contain toxic compounds and should not be ingested by people or pets.

A Collector's Tropical Treasure

Zamia ‘Tiloo Cay’ is a beautiful reminder that extraordinary plants do not always need extravagant colors to stand apart. Sometimes, the most memorable specimens are those with graceful structure, subtle foliage, and a fascinating botanical history.
