🌿 Alocasia Antoro Velvet
Genus: Alocasia
Also known as Alocasia chienlii ‘Antoro Velvet’, this rare jewel Alocasia is celebrated for its
deep, dark velvety foliage and uniquely fuzzy texture. The arrow-shaped leaves range from rich forest green
to nearly black, accented by prominent veins and a soft, tactile surface that sets it apart from other Alocasia varieties. This plant typically growing to a mature height and width of about 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm), sometimes reaching up to 2 feet (60 cm) in ideal conditions, making it a great tabletop plant with its dark, velvety leaves and silver veins.
Discovered relatively recently in Indonesia, Antoro Velvet has quickly become a coveted collector’s plant. It grows from underground corms (rhizomes) and maintains an upright, compact habit, making it ideal for shelves, cabinets, or curated indoor displays.
This variety is known among collectors for being a bit more “dramatic” than other jewel Alocasias—rewarding attentive care with stunning foliage, while reacting quickly to changes in light, humidity, or watering.
🌱 Plant Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the velvety leaves.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist, allowing the top inch to dry slightly between waterings. Excellent drainage is essential.
- Humidity: High humidity is crucial (50%+ preferred). Humidifiers or pebble trays are highly beneficial.
- Soil: Well-draining, airy aroid mix using peat or coco coir, perlite, and bark.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer.
- Dormancy: May slow or go dormant in cooler months; maintain warmth and reduce watering.
- Growth Habit: Upright, compact jewel Alocasia growing from underground corms.
- Toxicity: Toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from pets and children.
With stable conditions and attentive care, Alocasia Antoro Velvet becomes a breathtaking focal point—perfect for collectors who enjoy challenging, high-reward plants with dramatic character.
