Neoregelia eleutheropetala ‘Red’

Neoregelia eleutheropetala ‘Red’ is a beautifully colored bromeliad with a distinctive tropical character. Its open, symmetrical rosette is composed of elongated leaves edged with noticeable serrations, giving the plant a more rugged and architectural appearance than many smoother-leaved Neoregelia hybrids.

The real attraction is its remarkable foliage. Depending on maturity, light levels, and growing conditions, plants can display an impressive combination of deep burgundy, wine-red, crimson, copper, orange, and occasional yellow-green tones. The center often develops especially strong red coloration, creating a dramatic contrast with the older outer foliage.

Because coloration naturally varies from plant to plant and changes as the bromeliad matures, no two specimens will look exactly alike. Bright filtered light generally encourages the strongest and richest coloration.

Like other tank-forming bromeliads, Neoregelia grows as a compact rosette capable of holding water in its central cup. After reaching maturity, the mother plant will eventually produce offsets, or “pups,” which can be allowed to form an attractive colony or separated once sufficiently developed.

This colorful bromeliad is an excellent addition to tropical landscapes, patios, greenhouse collections, mounted bromeliad displays, and specialty plant collections.

Light: Bright filtered light to partial sun is ideal. Strong light encourages the deepest red, burgundy, and orange coloration. Acclimate gradually before exposing the plant to stronger sun, especially in hot climates.

Water: Keep a small amount of clean water in the central rosette and refresh it regularly. Water the growing medium as needed, allowing good drainage and avoiding constantly saturated soil.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is preferred, especially when accompanied by good air circulation.

Temperature: Best grown in warm tropical or subtropical conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold temperatures.

Potting: Use a loose, fast-draining bromeliad or epiphytic mix. Excellent drainage and airflow around the root system are important.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Bromeliads generally require much less fertilizer than conventional foliage plants.

Growth Habit: Rosette-forming bromeliad that produces offsets around the mature mother plant.

Color: Color intensity naturally varies according to maturity, season, light exposure, and individual plant characteristics.
