This genus of tropical foliage plants is mostly native to forest floor near the edges of rainforests of Southeast Asia. As a group they prefer bright shady conditions and warm weather, on a patio or near a bright window. Full sun is too bright and can burn the leaves. Avoid cold weather below 50 Degrees F. as they will have a tendency to drop their leaves and go dormant till warm weather resumes.

Do not over water when conditions are cooler than 65 degrees F. as this will lead to root and rhizome rot. The only major pests under most conditions are mites which can attack upper and lower leaf surfaces. These can be eliminated with mitescides or on a more individual house plant basis with soapy water, a spritz of water to wash mites off or a soft cloth to wipe dust and mites off the leaves.

Description

Calathea

Calathea is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Marantaceae. They are commonly called calatheas or (like their relatives) prayer plants. About 200 species formerly assigned to Calathea are now in the genus Goeppertia.

Calathea currently contains around 60 species. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences. The young leaves and bracts can retain pools of water called phytotelmata, that provide habitat for many invertebrates.

Light:

It thrives best in bright, indirect or filtered light. Will tolerate some degree of shade, however, insufficient light may cause loss of variegation in the leaves. If there is too much light, the colors in the leaves fade.

Grows well as an indoor plant. Indoor place your Calathea plant in a part of a room that receives low to bright indirect light. As a rule, the darker the foliage—such as with the calathea ornata—the lower the light requirements.

Soil:

It grows best in a well-drained, peat based, indoor potting soil.

Temperature:

It prefers normal temperatures between 60 degrees Fahrenheit – 80 degrees Fahrenheit, avoid temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius / 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Lower temperatures can damage the leaves of Calatheas

Water:

Water your plant regularly during the growing season and always keep the soil moist but never allow your plant to sit in water. During the winter season, reduce watering and you can allow the topsoil to become slightly dry between each watering.

Fertilizer:

Fertilize your plant every two weeks with a half-diluted liquid fertilizer during the active growth period (spring and summer). It’s not necessary to fertilize in the winter and fall.

Propagation:

It can be easily propagated by division of rooted offshoots. In spring take cuttings 4 – 5 inches long with three or four leaves and trim off any leaf-stalk sheaths that would be below the soil surface when planted.

Humidity:

High humidity is very important for these plants. If the air is dry You can provide ample humidity by placing a humidifier in the room, or by placing the potted plants on top of a saucer filled with pebbles. Add water to the pebbles and the humidity will travel up through the pebbles and the pot to the plant’s roots. Be sure the plant is sitting on the pebbles and not in the water

Re-potting:

Re-pot during spring season once every 2 years, just in a somewhat bigger pot if the roots have consumed all the space with the present pot.

Pests and Diseases:

It has no serious pest and disease problems. Watch for Mealy Bugs, Spider mites, and Aphids. Treat spider mites with insecticidal soap.
