Philodendron ‘Splendid’

Philodendron ‘Splendid’ – Velvet-Leaved Climbing Aroid

Philodendron ‘Splendid’ is an exceptional hybrid between two legendary velvet-leaved Aroids, Philodendron verrucosum and Philodendron melanochrysum. The result brings together some of the most desirable characteristics of both parents: dramatic heart-shaped foliage, a luxurious velvety surface, striking venation, and an impressive climbing growth habit.

The foliage is the true attraction. Mature leaves develop a rich, deep emerald to nearly black-green coloration with a soft, velvety surface that changes subtly as light moves across the leaf. Bright lime to yellow-green veins create a beautiful contrast against the dark foliage, emphasizing the sculptural shape and texture of every leaf.

New leaves may emerge in warmer bronze, copper, or reddish tones before gradually deepening in color as they harden and mature. With favorable growing conditions and vertical support, each successive leaf can become increasingly large and dramatic.

Philodendron ‘Splendid’ is a climbing Aroid and performs best when allowed to grow upward on a moss pole, plank, or similar support. Giving its aerial roots something to attach to encourages stronger climbing growth and helps the plant develop the impressive mature foliage for which this hybrid is prized.

Its combination of sumptuous velvet foliage, luminous venation, and progressively larger leaves makes Philodendron ‘Splendid’ an outstanding specimen for Aroid collectors and tropical foliage enthusiasts.

Philodendron ‘Splendid’ Care

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch or discolor the delicate velvety foliage.

Water: Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the growing medium begins to dry. Keep the plant evenly hydrated while avoiding constantly saturated soil or standing water.

Soil: Grow in a loose, well-draining Aroid mix that provides excellent drainage and aeration around the roots.

Humidity: Philodendron ‘Splendid’ appreciates moderate to high humidity, particularly while new leaves are unfurling and expanding. Good airflow is beneficial when growing under higher humidity.

Temperature: Warm tropical conditions are preferred. Protect the plant from cold temperatures, sudden temperature changes, and drafts.

Growth Habit: Climbing. A moss pole, wooden plank, or other vertical support is highly recommended. Allowing the plant to climb encourages stronger growth and progressively larger foliage.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced fertilizer during periods of active growth, following the manufacturer's recommended dilution. Reduce feeding when growth naturally slows.

Collector's Note: The velvety appearance of the foliage can vary dramatically depending on lighting and viewing angle. This natural interaction with light is part of what makes velvet-leaved Philodendrons so distinctive.
