Rhynchostylis Gigantea ‘Big Spots’

Overview:
Rhynchostylis Gigantea ‘Big Spots’ is an extraordinary orchid variety celebrated for its unique, vibrant flowers. The blooms feature prominent, bold spots against a lighter background, creating a striking visual contrast. This cultivar combines beauty, fragrance, and resilience, making it a prized possession for orchid enthusiasts.

Rhynchostylis (Rhy.) orchids are close relatives to Vanda orchids. The main difference between these related genera is flowers – unlike Vanda, Rhynchostulis orchids have one-lobed lips and usually fragrant. Before re-classification, this genus consisted of 13 species from China, Indochina, Indonesia, Indian Subcontinent, Malaysia and the Philippines, but now there are only four recognized species in this genus of marvelous orchids. Rhynchostylis orchids grow epiphytically in the Asian rainforests on the lower parts of trees, unlike Vanda orchids, which grow on the tops.

Features

  • Blooms: Large, showy flowers with a creamy white or pale background adorned with dark, striking spots, often purple or maroon. The dense flower spikes can grow up to 12–15 inches, producing numerous blooms per spike.
  • Fragrance: Emits a sweet, pleasant scent, especially during the day.
  • Growth Habit: Compact with thick, strap-like leaves and prominent aerial roots, characteristic of the Rhynchostylis genus.
  • Blooming Season: Typically blooms in late fall to winter, with flowers lasting 3–4 weeks.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight as it may scorch the leaves. Filtered light similar to its natural forest canopy habitat works best.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the roots to dry slightly between waterings. Maintain consistent watering during the growing season. Reduce frequency during cooler months.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity levels (60–80%). Use a humidifier or humidity tray if growing indoors.
  • Temperature: Warm-loving orchid; daytime temperatures of 75–90°F (24–32°C) and nighttime temperatures no lower than 60°F (15°C).
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength weekly during active growth. Reduce feeding in dormant periods.
  • Air Movement: Adequate airflow is essential to prevent fungal infections, especially in high humidity.
  • Potting: Best grown in hanging baskets or mounted on wood slabs with minimal medium, allowing the roots to remain exposed and well-aerated.

Unique Qualities

  • Bold Appearance: The distinct, oversized spots on the flowers make this variety particularly eye-catching and unique.
  • Fragrance: Its sweet scent adds an extra layer of appeal to its visual beauty.
  • Easy to Grow: Known for its adaptability to warm, humid environments, this orchid is a good choice for experienced growers and beginners alike.
