Description

Cattleya longipes – Miniature Brazilian Species Orchid

Cattleya longipes is a beautiful miniature species orchid native to southeastern Brazil. Despite its compact stature, this little Cattleya produces remarkably showy flowers, combining soft lavender-pink tones with a luminous yellow throat and contrasting burgundy to wine-colored markings along the lip.

The flowers rise above the compact foliage on slender stems, creating an airy display that feels graceful rather than oversized. The combination of its small growth habit, colorful flowers, and true species status makes Cattleya longipes especially appealing to collectors who appreciate Brazilian Cattleyas and miniature orchids.

Historically, this species has traveled through several botanical classifications and may still be encountered in orchid collections under older names such as Laelia longipes and Laelia lucasiana. Today, the accepted botanical name is Cattleya longipes.

🌿 Care Guide

Light: Provide bright light with some gentle direct morning sun. Good light is important for compact growth and flowering, but protect the foliage from intense midday and afternoon sun, particularly in hot climates.

Water: Water thoroughly while the plant is actively growing, allowing the roots and growing medium to approach dryness between waterings. Avoid keeping the root zone continuously wet.

Humidity: Moderate humidity with consistent air movement is ideal. Good ventilation around the roots and foliage is particularly important when humidity is high.

Temperature: Grow in intermediate conditions with warm days and noticeably cooler nights. Avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures or excessive heat without adequate airflow.

Potting: Use a very open, fast-draining orchid medium that allows abundant air around the roots. Small bark, inorganic components, or similarly free-draining orchid mixes can work well. Avoid dense media that remain wet for extended periods.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced orchid fertilizer. Reduce feeding when growth slows.

Growth Habit: Compact and pseudobulbous, making this species particularly attractive for growers who want the beauty of a Cattleya without the footprint of many larger-growing varieties.

Bloom: Flowers typically display soft pink to lavender-pink sepals and petals surrounding a striking yellow throat, often accented by deeper burgundy or wine-colored markings on the lip. Flower color and intensity can vary naturally between individual plants.

305 Greenery Tip: Give Cattleya longipes plenty of light, excellent drainage, and strong air movement while avoiding constantly wet roots. Its compact size makes it easy to underestimate, but when it blooms, this miniature species becomes the centerpiece of the orchid bench.

Flowers are not guaranteed. Blooming stage, flower count, coloration, and markings may vary naturally from plant to plant and according to growing conditions.
