Vanda Nopporn Golden Spots × Kulwadee Fragrance No. 529 is a spectacular vandaceous orchid combining dramatic coloration with the intricate patterning that makes spotted Vandas so captivating.

The broad, rounded flowers open in luminous shades of golden yellow to chartreuse-green, then become heavily overlaid with burgundy, wine, and reddish-purple spotting. In many blooms the markings become so dense toward the center that they create an almost tessellated appearance, while the lighter background remains visible around the margins and between the markings.

Every flower carries slightly different patterning, giving the inflorescence a wonderfully organic, hand-painted appearance. When several flowers are open together, the contrast between the golden background and deep wine-colored markings creates an especially dramatic display.

Light

Provide very bright, filtered light. Vandas generally require considerably more light than many common indoor orchids. Outdoors in warm climates, bright filtered light or lightly shaded conditions work beautifully. Avoid suddenly exposing a plant accustomed to shade to intense direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Water

Vandas appreciate abundant water while actively growing, particularly when grown in baskets with exposed roots. Water thoroughly, allowing the roots to become fully saturated, then provide enough air movement for them to dry between waterings. During hot weather, basket-grown plants may require daily watering.

Humidity & Air Circulation

Warm temperatures, good humidity, and excellent air circulation are ideal. The roots should receive both moisture and plenty of oxygen. Avoid keeping the root system continuously wet or stagnant.

Fertilizer

Feed regularly during active growth with a balanced orchid fertilizer at a diluted strength. A “weakly, weekly” approach works particularly well for Vandas when plants are actively growing and receiving frequent watering.

Temperature

This Vanda prefers warm tropical conditions. Protect the plant from prolonged cold temperatures and reduce watering somewhat during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Growing Habit

Vandas are naturally epiphytic orchids and perform beautifully in open baskets where their long aerial roots can remain exposed. Avoid cutting healthy aerial roots simply because they extend beyond the basket—the extensive root system is an important part of the plant.

With Vandas, think bright light, abundant water, and abundant air. During warm weather, don't be afraid to soak those aerial roots thoroughly. Healthy roots generally turn greener when hydrated and return to a silvery-gray appearance as they dry.
