Vanda ‘Sonia Deccach’ No. 440 is a beautifully patterned Vanda orchid featuring broad, overlapping flowers in a sophisticated blend of golden yellow, apricot, peach, and coppery orange. Fine burgundy-red spotting spreads across the petals and sepals, becoming especially dense toward the lower portions of the blooms and creating a richly textured appearance.

The flowers are finished with a contrasting deep burgundy to wine-red lip, giving the warm-toned blooms additional depth and definition. Individual flowers may vary slightly in their balance of yellow, orange, copper, and red patterning as they mature.

Like other Vandas, this orchid develops an upright growth habit with long, strap-like foliage and exposed aerial roots. When mature and well grown, its flower spikes can carry multiple large blooms at once, producing an impressive tropical display.

Light: Provide very bright filtered light. Vandas generally require stronger light than many commonly grown orchids, but protect the foliage from intense midday sun that could cause burning.

Water: Water thoroughly and frequently during warm weather, allowing the roots to dry between waterings. Plants grown in open baskets may require daily watering during hot, dry conditions. Reduce watering somewhat during cooler periods while avoiding prolonged dehydration.

Humidity & Airflow: Vandas appreciate warm, humid conditions combined with excellent air circulation. Good airflow around the foliage and exposed roots is particularly important in humid climates.

Temperature: Best grown warm. Protect from prolonged cold conditions and temperatures below approximately 50°F.

Fertilizer: Feed regularly during active growth with a balanced orchid fertilizer at a diluted strength. Periodically flush the roots thoroughly with plain water to help prevent fertilizer-salt buildup.

Growing Habit: Vandas are commonly grown in open baskets or other highly aerated setups that allow their substantial aerial root systems to remain exposed and receive excellent airflow.
